One of Fountain County's oldest residents and a retired teacher and farmer, Ora M. Livengood, 97, died at 10:45 last night (July 4, 1967) in Lake View Memorial Hospital. He had been hospitalized only a day. He resided on Covington Route 3 and drove into town weekly to do his own marketing. He had taught music in Oakwood, Fithian and Charity in Illinois. He also had taught in Indiana - had 108 students at Scottsprairie and also had taught a Sunday School class in Parke County which numbered 35 students. He enjoyed vocal music best, had written several songs and sang at revivals in both Illinois and Indiana. He also estimated that he had sung at 1,000 funerals. He lived during the terms of 18 presidents, beginning with Ulysses S. Grant, and had voted in every election since 1891. As a farmer, he once sold corn for 10 cents a bushel and wheat for 50 cents a bushel. His first taxes, he said once, amounted to $2.50 and were levied for "a horse and some pigs." Born Jan. 31, 1870 south of Hillsboro he was the son of Solomon and Elizabeth Day Livengood. He married the former Augusta Boord Aug. 11, 1891 and she died april 14, 1939. She taught school at Fithian, Ill., and later at Veedersburg. He was a member of the Covington Methodist church and had served as a trustee 60 years. He directed the Men's Choir for many years. He was a graduate of the old Covington Normal School. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lorraine Thompson of Covington and Mrs. Merle (Bernice) Randolph of Danville, Ill., a son, Harlan B. of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Belle McKee of Covington; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. The body is at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home and friends may call after noon Thursday. Services will be there at 2 p.m. Friday and burial will be in Mt. Ora M. Livengood, 97, former teacher of music at Indiana University and at the University of Illinois, died at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeview Hospital in Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient one day. Mr. Livengood was a graduate of Covington Normal and taught music at many Parke and Fountain County communities. Active in church work, he was a trustee over 60 years at Covington Methodist Church, where he was a member. He also led the Men's Chorus for many years. He was a retired farmer. He was born south of Hillsboro Jan. 31, 1870, a son of Soloman and Elizabeth Day Livengood. He was married to Anagusta Boord Aug. 11, 1891. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Loraine Thompson of Covington and Mrs. Berenice Randolph of Danville, Ill.; a son, Harlan B. of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Belle McKee of Covington; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife on April 14, 1939; a daughter; two brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home here with Rev. Donald Ashley and Rev. C. Earl Livengood officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. --Typed by Debby Masterson.
